Our process
Preparing an application
The City Planning Commission is staffed by the Community Planning and Economic Development (CPED), Development Services and Long Range Planning divisions.
CPED staff reviews all:
- Proposed rezonings
- Street and alley vacations
- Public land sales
- Zoning code text amendments
- Amendments to the Comprehensive Plan
To determine what application you need to complete, please contact CPED staff.

Notice
Public notice means letting the public know about certain types of legal proceedings. The City publishes notices in its official paper, Finance & Commerce.
Also, we send notices to neighbors of the application 21 days before the public hearing.

At the public hearing, the commission might discuss your application or consider it under a consent agenda. Here's how they differ:

Appeals
If your application is denied, you have 10 days after the Planning Commission meeting to appeal.
City Council will consider your appeal at its Business, Housing & Zoning Committee.
The following Planning Commission decisions may not be appealed:
- Street and alley vacations
- Rezonings
- Amendments to the Zoning Code
- 40 Acre Studies
- Amendments to the Comprehensive Plan
These are then forwarded to the City Council for final approval.
