Community engagement

We'll give community members many opportunities to share their thoughts about the future of George Floyd Square.

Framework for engagement

The community will shape the future plans for George Floyd Square (GFS). To begin this process, the City will developing a Community Engagement Framework. It will outline how the City, community and stakeholders will work together.

The three focus areas are:

  • Peoples Way
  • Memorials
  • Right-of-Way

The City has developed a George Floyd Square (GFS) Community Engagement Framework document. 

The document is available on our Legislative Information Management System (LIMS).

George Floyd Square priorities and vision

The City and the community together will develop a George Floyd Square (GFS) Community Priorities and Vision document. It will outline a shared vision for George Floyd Square and the priorities for it to thrive and grow.

The document will include:

  • Community priorities and values.
  • Future use and ownership of the Peoples Way.
  • Locations and goals for future memorials.
  • The City's role for the memorials.
  • Right-of-way infrastructure design and operational needs.

Phases

Center

Primary goal: Engage the community
Start date: Now


Activities:

  • Host a community event to recap and explain future engagement.
  • Issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) to hire a consultant team for Phase 2.

Define

Primary goal: Develop priorities and vision
Start date: Spring 2024


Activities:

  • Work with the community to develop the priorities and vision for George Floyd Square. 
  • Create the written GFS Community Priorities and Vision document to guide all the work moving forward.
  • Begin the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) process to select the community-centered owner of Peoples Way.

 

Design

Primary goal: Complete design work
Start date: 2024-2025


Activities:

  • Finish the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) process to select the community-centered owner of Peoples Way.
  • Support the design of the memorials.
  • Design the conceptual layout for the right-of-way for public streets, sidewalks, alleys and other public area. 
    Understand what is included in a right-of-way in Minneapolis

Develop

Primary goal: Start development
Start date: 2025


Activities:

  • Develop the Peoples Way site. 
  • Support and implement memorial efforts.
  • Create the final right-of-way design.

Visioning Workshop

The City and engagement team (4RM+ULA and the Cultural Wellness Center) will be holding a visioning workshop on June 25 to gather community visions within George Floyd Square.
