Minneapolis Guaranteed Basic Income Pilot

We give a monthly payment to families who need it.

About the Guaranteed Basic Income Program

In June of 2022, the City began piloting a Guaranteed Basic Income Program for 200 households.

How it works

  • Enrolled families receive $500 from the City each month to help boost your income.
  • You receive the payment every month for two years.
  • You use the extra money in a way that makes sense for you.

Program goals

  • You have the flexibility to balance immediate needs with long-term investments.
    • Immediate need examples: rent and food
    • Long-term investment examples: tuition, college savings, vehicle repairs
  • You become financially secure.

Program dates

June 2022 – June 2024

Program outcomes

We do surveys with those taking part in the program about every 6 months. Right now, we have data from the first 6 months of the program, and we're excited to share data from our survey at the 12-month mark very soon.
