History and benefits

Energy benchmarking is reducing energy costs and helping the environment.

A look at our history

In 2013, we started requiring large commercial and city-owned buildings to benchmark and report their energy consumption — a process known as energy benchmarking.

In 2019, we expanded our requirement to include:

  • Large multifamily residential buildings
  • Energy evaluations for low-performing buildings
  • Time-of-rent disclosures

The impact of our decisions

Building owners and the City have a better understanding of:

  • How much energy each building currently uses
  • How each building compares to other similar buildings
  • Where there are opportunities to make each building more efficient

This is resulting in building updates that:

  • Lower energy costs
  • Create healthier and more comfortable buildings
  • Contribute to a healthier environment throughout the city for all who live, work and play here
