Group Violence Intervention

We work to address gun violence and homicide associated with groups and gangs.

A three-part approach to reducing group and gang violence

Group Violence Intervention (GVI) is a strategy that brings together:
  • Community members
  • Law enforcement
  • Social services
We work together to reduce gun violence that is driven by groups and gangs. We work with those at greatest risk of being involved in gun violence by:
  • Helping them understand the moral and legal consequences of continued engagement in violence
  • Connecting them to support and outreach providers who can:
    • Help protect them from risk
    • Provide needed resources
    • Address trauma
    • Create an off-ramp away from the cycle of violence

Project impact

A 71% drop in group member-involved shootings in the first three years

  • Before GVI started in 2016, there were 93 non-fatal shootings involving group/gang members between May and September.
  • In 2017, we launched GVI.
  • In 2019, there were 27 non-fatal shootings involving group/gang members between May and September.

Long-term support to stay safe, alive and free

  • Once someone joins GVI, they continue to get help for as long as they need it.
  • Between 2017 and 2022, GVI served over 430 people.
