The City of Minneapolis is planning to reconstruct the Johnson St NE intersection north of the ramps leading to I-35W. The project provides an opportunity to improve the safety and comfort for all users of the intersection.
This new street design will meet the area’s current and future needs and aligns with the following City policies:
Project goals
The goal of this project is to improve the safety and comfort of all users of the intersection.
The project will:
- improve sidewalk connectivity and upgrade pedestrian ramps and signals,
- fill in an existing bikeway gap along Johnson St. NE
- improve the design and operation of the existing intersection,
- incorporate Green Stormwater Infrastructure
- improve the transit stops and experience along Johnson St. NE,
- add signal improvements, new signage, and new pavement markings as needed.
Project engagement
We welcome community feedback and input. To date, we completed two rounds of community engagement in 2023.

Project timeline
Engagement for the project started in 2022 and will continue into 2023, along with the design process. Final design will occur between late 2023 to early 2024. Construction will take place between 2024 and 2025.
