Parkway paving overview

The Park Board owns 55 miles of parkways in Minneapolis. These parkways let people enjoy the City's parks, lakes, gardens, and different neighborhoods.

The City helps keep the parkways in good shape with the Parkway Paving Program. The Park Board gives extra funding when needed. This program helps the pavement last longer and keeps maintenance costs down.

Parkway paving information

The Parkway Paving Program consists of replacing the top of the asphalt. The City applies sealcoat treatments the year after resurfacing to keep the Parkway's signature red color. It does this by spreading liquid asphalt on top of the pavement then spreading rocks over the liquid. Equipment then presses those rocks into the liquid asphalt before it hardens.

The street is swept to pick up any left over rock. The sealcoat helps the road stay in better condition longer by sealing cracks, and preventing potholes and water damage. When water gets into cracks and freezes, cracks grow and the parkways become less smooth.

6 year paving program

Every year, The City of Minneapolis and the Park Board set the schedule of paving improvements for the Parkway Paving Program. The City’s 20 Year Street Funding Plan guides the programming and scheduling of improvements. This plan documents how projects are prioritized for inclusion in the annual Capital Improvement Program (CIP).

The City evaluates each project by community make up, how many people use the street, and how people travel.

Assessments for Parkway Paving work

The City will assess nearby properties for the work done by the Parkway Paving program.

Assessments provide some of the costs, while the City pays for the rest.
