Around noon today, fire crews from the Minneapolis Fire Department responded to reports of fire at an encampment on the 1100 block of East 28th Street.

Upon arrival, fire crews found extensive flames burning in the camp, threatening multiple propane cylinders of various sizes and the surrounding structures. Multiple fire crews laid lines and were able to quickly extinguish the fire with only minimal damage caused to the surrounding structures.

There were no serious injuries reported. Two individuals were treated at the scene by paramedics for non-life-threatening injuries. Neither individual was transported to a hospital for further treatment.

The City’s Homeless Response Team, along with outreach workers from several other organizations, have been on site of the fire, offering to connect people to shelter and providing clothing and water to those affected. A Metro Transit bus was also on scene to provide a warm place for people who were evacuated.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. City crews will secure the site with fencing and test environmental conditions.

City officials provided an update on the response to the fire at a news conference this afternoon.
