What to do
Report a behavioral or mental health crisis
Call 911 to report a life threatening situation or get help immediately.
What happens when you call
911 will:
- Talk with you to gather information about the crisis
- Determine how to help you or the person in distress
- Send a Behavioral Crisis Response (BCR) team unit if appropriate, such as when:
- No firearms are involved
- Person in need is non-violent
- Calls are within city limits

When BCR is available
Behavioral crisis response is available Monday - Friday, 24 hours a day. Two vehicles operate throughout the city.
When BCR partners with other emergency first responses
BCR may request backup from other emergency first responders, including:
- Fire
- Hennepin Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
- Police
The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) can request the presence of BCR if they feel that they need behavioral health services during a response.
When police are involved
To make sure the scene is safe, we require the police be present when the situation involves:
- A deadly weapon
- Potential threat of violence
If both BCR units are unavailable, then 911 will send the MPD to a mental health crisis call.
