Crime victim rights

If you are a victim of a crime in the State of Minnesota, you have the right to be notified of about the following steps in the legal process. 

  • The prosecution process and your participation 
  • Details of any plea bargain agreements
  • Court schedule changes that affect you because you have been subpoenaed or asked to testify
  • The final decision in a case
  • Appeals filed by the defendant
  • The oral argument or hearing
  • Restitution and reparations

You also have the right to be told about:

  • Crime victim assistance programs and resources near you
  • A defendant's petition for expungement — a request to have their crime conviction removed from their criminal record
